The origins of the Vampyre term Black Swan

In 1997 I coined a term called Black Swan for my partner Lucianna at the time. She wanted to participate in the vampire world but didn’t identify as a full Vampire. So I came up with the term which was original “My Swan” out of respect for her instead of calling her a ghoul or familiar. So here is the Black Veil as presented in the book Black Veils: Master Vampyre Edition 888.

Black Swans

Within the Veils, “Black Swans” are non-Vampire individuals who are intimately knowledgeable about the Black Veils and are friendly allies to their vampire friends. They are often involved in the Vampire subculture and associated with a Vampire, and can be friends, donors, dayside family members, lovers, or even potential Vampires yet to be awakened. The term Black Swan was coined at the New York City (Gotham Halo) Vampire nightclub Long Black Veil in 1997, for those who would bring their friends, parents, siblings, and lovers to the club.

One misconception within the Vampire World is that all Black Swans are donors. This is certainly very common, but it is not always the case. Many are even lifestyle Vampires who wear fangs, dress up, and know a great deal about the Vampire culture, philosophy, and traditions.. Often Black Swans are practicing the dayside elements of the Vampire lifestyle known as “lifestylers.”

In contrast to Black Swans are “White Swans’ who are against the Vampire lifestyle to varying degrees ranging from very hostile to just annoying.  These individuals can range from a girlfriend, friend, sibling or parent who strongly mocks or dislikes the Vampire lifestyle. They often will say things like, ìWhy are you wearing fangs?î or ìYou are really only living in a fantasy world, so stop it.î

Black Swans are to be treasured by Vampires and are strong allies. Treat them well and with respect, they are not pets but individuals with open minds and often resonate strongly with the Current and Vampire World. Even though the term originated at Long Black Veil it has become used by the Vampire Community throughout the world.

BLACK VEILS – The Modern Vampire Mythos

A excerpt from BLACK VEILS MASTER VAMPYRE EDITION

The Modern Vampire Mythos is defined in Black Veils as the collective impact of all of the legends, film, literature, fantasy and mythology related to the vampire from all time periods. From ancient times almost every culture has included some sort of vampiric mythological figure in their superstitions and lore, ranging from the Lilitu demons of ancient Sumerian and Jewish myths, the Incubi / Succubi of Medieval folklore, the faerie like Baobhan Sith of the Scottish Highlands, the Strigoi of Romania, the bloodthirsty Gods of Central and South America and the ghoulish predators of Asia and Africa.

These past legends have collectively given rise to our own modern vampire mythos. One can say that this modern mythos began with the Romantic Movement literary work of author John William Polidori; the short story “The Vampyre” published on April 1st, 1819, featuring the suave British nobleman vampire character Lord Ruthvan. This more modern view of the vampire was expanded upon in Victorian literature works such as the lurid serialized penny dreadful Varney the Vampire (1845-7) and the gothic horror of Carmilla (1871). Then all radically changed with the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1897, and from there the Modern Vampire Mythos exploded into mainstream culture in a very refined manner.

The Vampire Mythos was truly defined and evolved in 20th century though thousands of incarnations in film, television, literature, role-playing games (RPGs), video games, merchandise and even spawned an entire Vampyre lifestyle subculture. The biggest influences of the past 100 years on the Vampire Mythos, aside from Dracula (in films from 1931, 1958, 1979 and 1992), include Barnabas Collins from the gothic daytime drama Dark Shadows (1966-71), Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles novels (Interview with the Vampire published in 1975) and the tabletop role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade (released in 1991). All of these interpretations have influenced and illustrated what a modern Vampyre can be; that is regal, aristocratic, angelic anti-hero, who is immortal, powerful and highly social yet extremely independent. The Vampyre is a powerful being that many of us wish to become. We can see them reflected in our own primal desires and a as monster that we can relate to, and many times sympathize with.

This is the modern 21st century Modern Vampire Mythos and its spirit is the Vampyre Current.

Eternal Fangs – Professional Permanent Fangs

Many people have asked where Dani Divine and Alley Kat got their permanent fangs. The Eternal Fangs are done by a Dr. Hayk and are perm while the Sabretooth SFX caps are done by Father Sebastiaan.

Lavita Dental Spa: Hayk Arakelyan, DDS Dentist in Los Angeles, California (323) 648-0001 ~ Say Father Sebastiaan sent you. $1200 per pair

Are the fangs actually done by a real dentist?
Yes they are installed by Dr. Hayk Arakelyan, DDS with offices at 6333 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048.  What is the difference between these fangs and ones made by a fang smith?

Do I need to go to LA to get my Eternal Fangs?
Yes, our dental office is located in Beverly Hills and requires you to come to LA and have the teeth done in person.
What are the fangs made of?
The caps are zirconia 3D printed caps made in a professional dental laboratory.
How long does it take?
Usually two days.  One Day for prep and the second for installation.
Do you remove my own teeth?
No they are laminants which cover slightly modified teeth in most cases.
How old do I have to be?
You must be at least legal age of majority at 18 years of age.
How much do they cost?
The price for the basic pair of classic Eternal Fangs is $1200.

What is in a Vampyre name? by Father Sebastiaan

SanguinariumhHeader

Original Article on the Sanguinarium…

Within the Sabretooth Clan, our community Sanguinarium and corresponding Vampyre community, tradition holds that individuals often have chosen names, which are personal and descriptive pseudonyms which are informally known as “Nightside names” or formally known as “Sobriquets.”

Such names are similar to Nom de Plume (pen names) for writers and stage names for performers. These pseudonyms are used as a form of address within the Vampyre community. This name is often chosen by the Vampyre or given to them by another member of the community. It is formally bestowed upon them at their first rite of passage or a later point.

Examples of other traditions using such alias come mainly from the esoteric community, such magickal names are often employed and these are known as “Magickal Mottos.”Originally these took root in Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and continued in successive orders such as the Ordo Templis Orientis (OTO) and Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT). Those familiar with Wicca and modern Neo-Paganism will often be familiar with the tradition of “Craft names.” For example, legendary occultist Aleister Crowley used the moniker, Perdurabo, which means in Latin “I will endure to the end.”

Similar nicknames to sobriquets are in use in many other subcultures including the Burning Man community where they have “Playa names”, “handles” in the hacker community, call signs for pilots and in the BDSM community one often uses a pseudonym such as “Master /Mistress <enter name=”” here=””>.” Each community holds their own traditions on how to obtain such a name.

Like in the Mafia, fraternal societies or in the military, seekers will often have to earn their named Sobriquet or have it given to them by a senior member of the Sanguinarium. Often, it is the one who introduced them to the Mysteries. Earning a sobriquet from one’s peers requires one to develop a name based from inspirations of the subject’s personality and spirit or place they pass their first rite of passage into the Mysteries. Choosing or being given an appropriate name is a big decision as this will often stick with the individual their entire life and beyond. However, if an initiate wishes to change their sobriquet, this is traditionally done when passing through higher rites of passage.

Sobriquets are used to maintain a separation between dayside life and nightside life as well as protect the privacy and aid in the Awakening of an individual by adopting a chosen name. Wisdom dictates choosing a name from ancient languages such as SumerianAncient EgyptianEnochianCeltic, Hebrew and other ancient languages. Other such names come from ancient deities, heroes of legend or found during scrying or meditation. Use dictionaries from these languages to look up good translations such as the Sumerian dictionary,Old Norse NamesEnochian dictionary and Llewellyn’s Nook of Names is a great resource.

Names coming from role-playing games (such as VTM clan names), overdone lordly titles, fictional characters and video games are usually discouraged within the Sanguinarium and humorous. Choose a name which is unique, simple, easy to remember and interesting. It is wise to settle-in with a sobriquet that truly reflects your inner spiritual truths or quests.

Addressing someone by their chosen Sobriquet is polite, honorable, respectful and courteous, especially when interacting amongst Vampyres. It shows good character from the addressing party. In contrast it is considered rude, disrespectful, in poor taste and an invasion of privacy to address someone as their “mundane name” within the community, especially when they proudly display their sobriquet.

Remember: names are power, so choose wisely.
